Plastic Resin Supply Chain Update for the remainder of 2024

(Updated September 2024)

As we wind down 2024, below are some updates on some of the most common injection molding resins.   Consider this information when looking into future orders or planning your next project.

At Crescent, we watch these trends to help you plan for future orders on critical components.
ABS

Price increases are expected while automotive and electronic markets remain strong.

Also, Ineos Styrolution declared a Force Majeure in May due to a severe drought at a production facility in Mexico.  This ultimately affects Terluran, Novodur, and Luran grades.

Acetal
Supply has improved, and prices should continue to decrease.
Polyethylenes A $0.05/lb price increase went into effect on July 1, 2024.
Nylons

Nylon prices are projected to hold with no increases in the near future.

Nylon 6 and 6/6 supply is good, with plenty of surplus for typical grades.  Lead times for special order domestic supply are typically 4-10 weeks.

Polycarbonates
The demand witnessed a healthy growth in 2024, and lead times continue to fall.
Prices are likely to remain firm.
Polypropylenes Invista declared a Force Majeure in March due to operational disruptions at a production facility in Texas.  This has resulted in a net price increase of $0.05/lb.
Polystyrene Flat pricing has been the trend and will hope to continue; however, Ineos declared a Force Majeure on production in July due to a power outage from a tornado at a plant in Illinois.
Engineering Grades

PBT still has a tight domestic supply, but imports are available.  North American markets demonstrated notable price stability for PBT.

Additives

Glass additive supplies have been improving.

Flam retardants and other additives are still constrained and will remain through 2024.
